Heavy Metals in the Aquatic Environment: An International Conference
This volume contains the proceedings of an international conference held in Nashville, Tennessee, in December 1973, focusing on the presence, behavior, and impacts of heavy metals in aquatic environments. The conference was co‑sponsored by the International Association on Water Pollution Research, the Sport Fishing Institute, and Vanderbilt University’s Department of Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. The book comprises 45 chapters organized into eight thematic sections, addressing toxicology and physiology, analytical techniques, transport and distribution mechanisms, source reduction, corrective measures, and legislation and monitoring. Particular emphasis is placed on human exposure to methylmercury, cadmium toxicity (including itai‑itai disease), impacts on fish and aquatic organisms, and the economic and social costs of removing heavy metals from wastewater effluents. The work serves as a foundational reference for scientists, engineers, and policymakers involved in water pollution control and environmental protection.
