Media and Mental Distress
This study investigates how mental health conditions such as schizophrenia are depicted in news and fictional media, demonstrating routine stigmatization. It analyses both factual and fictional media content, explores public attitudes and carers' perspectives, and examines the impact of media portrayals on service users and policy debates (notably the UK’s “Care in the Community”). Developed from empirical research by the Glasgow Media Group in collaboration with Scotland’s Health Education Board.
